Genesis Elijah - Deh Pon Road
Genesis Elijah, hailing from South London, has been popping up on mixtapes here and there, as well as having a strong featuring role on Wordsmith and Caruana’s excellent Roadman Showcase album on Son Records. This collection of songs recorded between 2001 and 2005 is strong and all linked together by Genesis’ urgent and militant flows. From the amazing Jah Bless featuring some of the best production of the year to the Terra Firma and Wordsmith featuring Gun Talk, this is a militant album, taking all the problems of life on road and throwing them back out at the establishments. The rhetoric on here is impressive, intelligent and well thought out. Genesis is a big talent and can do club tracks, or he can do politics or he can invoke the spirit of Jah. It’s a varied album featuring strong production from Beat Butcha and Caruana amongst others. Despite the tracks being recorded over a long period of time, there is no dip in consistency in the rapping, and the beats are well picked. This hangs together well as an album and it is definitely worth picking up. Album highlight has to be the acerbic track, So Hip Hop, where Genesis takes a huge swipe at rap fans who want him to be realer than Hip Hop artists who hide behind fake personalities.
