Return of the big money Sound’ is exactly what it says on the packaging. Roll Deep are back with their second main studio album, on their own label, Roll Deep Recordings. The album marks the end of an 18 month break since their last offering, the street album Rules and Regulations. Since having had great success with their debut, ‘In At The Deep End’, which spawned two top twenty hits in 2005, the east London collective have grown immensely especially musically. Mastering their very own UK urban sound, the grime maestro’s have experimented with new sounds on this album, from dance, electro, ska, and even an acoustic track. Of course, Roll Deep have not forgotten their grime roots with some big bass bangers on the album as well. With production from Target, Danny weed, Wiley, and bless beats, Return of the Big Money Sound’ is a must buy!
Back in 2004 Akala released “The War Mixtape”, one of the first ever street-based mixtapes by a U.K. artist. The phenomenal response to this mixtape launched not only Akala’s career but also gave rise to the Birtish mixtape scene which has gone from strength to strength in recent years.
The long-awaited War Mixtape Vol. II sees Akala return to his roots as an MC without equal. Spitting over some of the most classic hip-hop beats of all time Akala delivers another lyrical master-class on the dark realities of life on the streets of “so-called ‘Great’ Britain” and the self-belief needed to overcome institutional oppression. At the same time, in a series of venemous battle-raps, Akala leaves no doubt as to who rules the top of the MC’ing roost and challenges anyone who dares to step-up and try to grab his crown. As if that weren’t enough Akala continues to break boundaries by rapping over several beats that may surprise the regular hip-hop mixtape crowd including tracks from Radiohead, Artic Monkeys, The Prodigy, Kasabian and DJ Shadow – proving once again that Akala truly is the ‘rap-rock-electro kid’.
